Flystrike is when flies lay eggs on a soiled or damp area (usually the rear) of a rabbit or guinea pig and the hatched maggots eat into the flesh — a rapidly fatal summer emergency.
Prevention is keeping the rear end clean and dry and checking it at least daily in warm weather, especially in rabbits with sticky caecotrophs or reduced mobility. Any sign of maggots needs an emergency vet.
