Molasses
Molasses is a sugary binder found in many cheap rodent foods and treats — a problem especially for degus, which are so prone to diabetes that their food must contain no molasses (or added sugar) at all.
Always check the ingredients of nuggets and treats for degus and other sugar-sensitive pets. If degu-specific food isn’t available, plain guinea-pig or chinchilla nuggets are acceptable only if molasses- and fruit-free.
