Mycoplasma (respiratory disease)
Mycoplasma is a bacterial respiratory infection extremely common in pet rats and mice, causing sneezing, sniffling, a chattering noise and laboured breathing — it has no cure and is managed, not eliminated.
Most rats carry it; stress, poor ventilation and high cage ammonia trigger flare-ups. Keeping the cage clean and low in ammonia, plus early antibiotic treatment of flare-ups, is how you fight it.
