Free tool · triage, not a diagnosis

Is my setup safe?

Most small-pet illness starts in the setup, not the animal — and it’s almost all preventable. Tell us which pet you keep and tick what’s true of your setup. You’ll get a personalised risk report: what to fix now, what to double-check, and the signs that mean it’s time to see a vet. Every check comes straight from our fact-checked care guides.

💛 Read first. This never diagnoses your animal or replaces a vet. Every check comes straight from our fact-checked care sheets — it just reflects your setup back against what keeps that species safe. The report always shows on this page, free. When in doubt, a vet call is never the wrong move.
☠️ The deadly mistakes — tick anything that’s true of your setup
📏 The numbers that matter — tick each you’ve confirmed
🩺 Warning signs — tick anything you’re seeing now

Every check is taken directly from Hayfold’s fact-checked care guides (sourced from RSPCA, PDSA and the Merck Veterinary Manual). This audit reflects your own ticks — it can’t see your animal and never diagnoses. When in doubt, ask an exotic vet.

Common questions

Is my small pet’s setup safe?

Check it against the three things that cause most harm: setup mistakes (like the wrong bedding, a wire floor, or housing a solitary species with a cage-mate), the husbandry numbers being right (enclosure size, companionship, temperature, diet), and any warning signs the animal is already showing. This free audit walks you through all three for your species and gives you a personalised risk report — every check comes straight from our fact-checked care guides.

What is the most common mistake new small-pet keepers make?

A cage that is too small, and getting companionship wrong — housing a solitary species (like a Syrian hamster) with a cage-mate, or keeping a herd animal (like a guinea pig) alone. Diet and bedding mistakes come close behind. Almost all of it is fixable once you know, and this audit surfaces the ones specific to your species.

Does the setup audit diagnose my pet or replace a vet?

No. It never diagnoses. It flags common setup risks from our fact-checked care sheets and always shows the “see an exotic vet” signs. If the audit surfaces a warning sign — or things do not improve after you fix the basics — see an exotic or small-animal vet, because a vet is the one who can diagnose and treat.

Is the setup safety audit free?

Yes — completely free, no account, and the risk report always shows on the page. Nothing that affects your pet’s welfare is ever behind a login. Joining the fold is optional; it just lets us save your result and remind you to re-check your setup.
