Quarantine

Quarantine is housing a new or sick small pet separately for a period before introducing it to others, to avoid spreading disease into an established group.

It’s especially worth doing for rats and mice (respiratory disease spreads easily) and any animal from an unknown source. Keep separate air space where you can, and handle the newcomer last.
